Pause, Rest, Be by Octavia F. Raheem

Questions for our time together:

~A major theme is rest and stillness as an act of courage. What does courage mean to you in the context of rest? Can rest ever feel risky or radical in our culture of constant doing?

~Raheem often writes about slowing down, presence, and deeper connection to our transitions with grace. What obstacles do you face when trying to slow down? (e.g., internal expectations, external rhythms, cultural pressures) How might you work with or around those obstacles?

~The book suggests that rest is not simply passive or indulgent, but regenerative and empowering. How might this view challenge or shift your existing beliefs about rest? Did your definition of “rest” change after reading the book?

~Consider the social and communal dimensions of rest that Raheem hints at (for example, collective shifts, shared fatigue).  How might rest be a relational or communal practice — beyond individual downtime? How has your community or culture influenced your rest practices?

~After finishing the book: What concrete practice, pause, or shift are you inspired to try? How will you hold yourself accountable (if you choose to) and how will you revisit this in, say, 3-6 months?
